Starship Children's Hospital (Aukland, New Zealand)

About Starship

It has been said the building looks like a spaceship or a cake! The hospital was New Zealand's first hospital built exclusively for children and young people and their health needs. Starship was opened on 18 November 1991. The name was chosen because of the design of the building and in the hope that children and young people would think of it as a less frightening place to go. Starship's prime focus is on delivering family-centred care in a child friendly environment.

Starship was designed to appeal to children and young people. It is built around a central atrium with a rainforest theme, a playground and natural light.

November 7, 1996 - In phenomenal footage narrated by Les Trent of American Journal, Michael is shown visiting “Starship." Trent followed Jackson from room to room as he spoke to each child, leaving each a toy and autographed photo or CD. In answer to Trent´s question regarding how the children´s faces make him feel, Jackson touches his chest, replying “It touches my heart.”
